Know your why

May 27, 2014

Last week I wrote about why it’s important to ask yourself questions. I think it’s even more important to ask yourself why you do the things you do.

There are times in business and life when things get a little less fun. I love having my own company and to work for many people. Though from time to time you get a client that is quite demanding without showing appreciation for the work you do. Those are the moments that can be challenging. Right then it’s important to know why you do what you do.

The other day I had a quick chat with one of my first clients. They have a local business and I developed their website many years ago. For a small or medium size company a good website can have a lot of impact. Working with entrepreneurs and starters often means doing business in a personal way and that’s what I like about it. Just a short conversation with that client reminded me why I have my own company: because I’m good in what I do and because I can help other people with my skills.

Richard Branson said multiple times that if money is your motivation, you’re not gonna make it. I believe that’s true. As soon as I realised that the real reason why I want to have my own company, to help other people, I instantly had new motivation and started thinking in a creative way again, asking myself questions like ‘How can I help them the best way?’

There will be times that you lack motivation and that you’re not in the mood for work or to keep doing what you’re busy with. At those moments, take some time to remind yourself why you started in the first place. Why did you start that company? Why did you take that job? Find an answer to the why and find your motivation!

When you feel like quitting, think about why you started
