Today I spend time thinking about a vertical menu. I did some research at Dribbble and made two sketches. I think menu’s are a necessity, but shouldn’t take to much space. My plan for today was to design a floating menu that can be dragged around, so users can place is wherever they want. After my first sketch I got the idea to make the menu even smaller by having it collapsed to a single square. When clicked on the square, the menu will expand and show the full size. I plan to work out these sketches in Photoshop later... View Article

When you got the sketches ready and have spend some time rethinking the design, the work in Photoshop is mainly expressing what you already have in mind. Visualising your thoughts and polishing your sketches. I find this part challenging, since it’s a lot easier to make a rough sketch than to work digitally on the details. Today I worked out the sketches I made yesterday and here is the result. A simple, minimalistic login screen. For this first challenge I purposefully didn’t look at Dribbble for inspiration, since I wanted it to be something coming from my own mind. I... View Article

This weekend we redecorated our office at Media Injection. I’m very interested in office design and enjoy looking at how great companies like Google have designed their offices. So when my colleague Bob asked me to help with the redecoration, I didn’t have to think twice about it. We started with sketching it all out on a big piece of paper. We shuffled with the desks and took many details in consideration, like how the entrance would look if new people enter the office and how we could minify the noise as much as possible. After two sketches we agreed... View Article

There are many things in life I want to learn. I want to keep improving my programming skills and I’d love to learn to play the piano some day. I also want to improve my design skills. For a long time I’ve had a passion for User Interface (UI) Design. I love looking at well designed interfaces and inspiring mock-ups. I’m fascinated by this craft and the importance of details that make all the difference between a good design and a great design. Years back I had never thought I would be capable of crafting such designs myself, it looked... View Article

As most of you know, I’m a big advocate of dreaming big. I believe you should aim high and challenge yourself. The motto of a friend of mine is “Shoot for the moon, even if you miss it you will land among the stars”. I think there is a good point in that. Having that said, I also learned that all big things start small. Facebook, Twitter, Google, they all started small and grew through time. Many of the big companies started in a garage. At Media Injection every Friday we have so called Hackatons, in which we collect creative ideas... View Article

I love to write. Most of the time I write code. Regularly I write thoughts and ideas down in a journal and from time to time I make notes in a notebook or in Evernote. Next to all that, I also got the desire to write publicly again, so tonight I quickly set up this blog. It still needs some finishing touches, but as I’m learning from the book I’m reading at the moment: it’s important to just make a start and so here I am. My idea is to write short blogs about Webdevelopment, UI Design and more interesting... View Article
